CD30 (Ber-H2, Ki-1)
Specificity: Single chain 120kDa transmembrane glycoprotein, in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue (Ber-H2) or fresh frozen tissue (Ki-1). Alveolar macrophages may express a variant cytoplasmic only protein.
Staining characteristics: Cell membrane & occasional Golgi apparatus. Variant alveolar macrophages may stain only cytoplasmically. (May also be detected in serum.)
Function: Considered part of tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNF-R) superfamily. Some evidence that it is an inhibitor of effector cells (NK and T cells) but upregulator of some apoptotic signals. Induces CCR7, appearing to direct a positive lymphocyte to lymph nodes.
Normal cell distribution: Varying proportion of activated T and B cells, and endometrial cells with decidual change.
CD30+:
- ((Hodgkin's Disease)) and Reed-Sternberg cells
- Anaplastic large cell lymphomas
- Embryonal carcinomas
- EBV, HIV, and/or HTLV-1 infected cells; possibly by general activation, possibly by direct viral influence
- Some seminomas/mixed germ cell tumors
