Pleomorphic adenoma (benign mixed tumor)


General: The most common parotid tumor, and 70~80% of all benign parotid tumors. Most commonly seen in middle-aged women with a painless slowly growing mass. Rarely (2~7%), may develop carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma. An additional very rare subset of morphologically similar tumor is a benign metastasizing mixed tumor, which can metastasize (usually to nodes, lungs, skin, and bone) many years later.

Gross: Typically solitary and well-demarcated.
