MacConkey agar


General: Contains a peptone base with lactose and distinguishes lactose fermenters from non-lactose fermenters (and sometimes rapid vs. delayed lactose fermeters). There are crystal violet and bile salt additives which inhibit most Gram+ microbes. Neutral red is an added pH indicator. Rapid lactose fermenters develop pink colonies overnight; non-fermenters remain colorless.
