Electrophoresis

General: May be carried out at either constant voltage, constant current, OR constant power. Using a higher voltage decreases the time required to complete the test, but increases heat (which can lead to distortions in the outcome for some analytes).

Stains: A variety of stains are used to assist in highlighting separation bands. These are often generic stains directed against the category of analyte of interest (protein, DNA, RNA, etc.), and include bromophenol blue or Ponceau S for proteins, oil red O for lipoproteins, and ethidium bromide for DNA, as well as radioactive labels iodine-125 or carbon-14.
