Cytopath Uterine Cervix

Cytopathology of the Uterine Cervix

General:

Gross: N/A

Microscopic:
  • Normal:
  • Degeneration/Repair: Uneven distribution of chromatin along the chromatinic rim, with chromatin and its interfaces hazy and blurred. Prominent nucleoli.
  • Atypical Repair: Moderately granular, evenly distributed chromatin. Uneven distribution of chromatin along the chromatinic rim. Prominent nucleoli.
  • Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions: Moderately granular, evenly distributed chromatin; the degree of granularity classically increases with the severity of the lesion.
    • Low grade: Nucleoli are NOT common.
    • High grade: Coarsely granular, evenly distributed heterochromatin ("salt and pepper chromatin"); this is somewhat variable and may have an uneven distribution with an irregular, crisp, angular interface with hypochromatic euchromatin, OR have bland nuclear features. Uneven distribution of chromatin along the chromatinic rim. Prominent nucleoli.
