Congo Red

Congo Red stain


General: An azo dye which stains amyloid as apple-green birefringence under polarized microscopy in a darkened room. May also be used as a pH indicator; red in basic, blue in acidic. Though commonly used, is not strictly specific.

Fixation: Formalin.

Standard/common uses:
  • Looking for amyloidosis
