Acridine orange

Acridine orange

General: This microbial stain is a fluorochrome dye that can bind nucleic acid. When applied in a buffered low-pH solution, bacteria and fungi appear orange and host material is green to yellow. It does not distinguish between viable and dead organisms. Reportedly more sensitive than Gram staining, but is routinely used in only a few laboratories.
